Welcome to sixth grade!
Dear Parents and Students,
My mission is to help students become enthusiastic learners, to find their passion and help them strive to achieve it. I want my students to develop a sense of fairness in learning; they will reach their goals through their own potential in the choices they make. I want students to leave the classroom feeling respected and cared about, both personally and academically. To accomplish these goals, our classroom must be a safe and orderly environment where we respect the school, our teachers, our peers and ourselves.

Along with weekly spelling tests and grammar and usage instruction, your student will use the writing process to produce many pieces of writing to include an autobiography, poetry, an adventure story, a nonfiction report, a myth, and a humorous fiction story.
I expect every student to succeed in language arts, and I’ll do whatever I can to help. Grades are based on spelling tests (20%), conventions, grammar, and usage assignments and quizzes (30%), and writing activities and assignments (50%). Homework is assigned most class periods, and the assignment will be written in the assignment book. Late work will only be accepted one class late and for a 25% grade reduction unless it is an excused absence. It is very important to get in the habit of doing your work the day it is assigned and turning it in when it is due.
To do well in 6th grade you must work hard to do your best. One question I get often from 6th graders concerned about their grades is “Can I do extra credit?” You should know that I am interested in extra credit assignments only when they are:
· Turned in AFTER required assignments are completed,
· Clearly connected to what we’re doing in class, and going beyond what we have done in class.
In general, I love to see students come up with ideas they wish to work on independently.
I will post assignments and important information on the Internet at this site (http://lfouse.googlepages.com/home). Bookmark and check this page often.
Students: At any time, if you are not sure what I expect from you, if you are confused about something we are studying, if you have fallen behind and don’t know how to catch up, or if you need to talk to me about anything (not limited to language arts), please ask me. I may not be able to help you with your problem during class time, but we can agree to meet before or after school or during seminar time. The same goes for parents- if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know either by a note in the assignment book, phone call or email. My email address is laura.fouse@eu.dodea.edu.
I look forward to working with you this year!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Fouse
